Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! In the spirit of Eco-inquiry’s HOOPAH initiative, let’s dive in to spreading messages with Hues of Optimism and Hope. Last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an ambitious conservation plan to significantly expand protected land and marine areas across Canada. The strategy aims to protect up to 1.6 million km² of land and 700,000 km² of oceans, helping the country move toward conserving 30% of its land and waters by 2030. The plan includes creating new national parks, marine protected areas, and urban parks, while also investing in Indigenous-led conservation programs and stewardship. Overall, the announcement signals a major commitment to biodiversity protection, climate action, and preserving Canada’s natural ecosystems for future generations.

The Wildflower Eco-Game and Virtual Choice Board at Plants | Eco-Games and Virtual Choice Boards includes resources to engage students in learning more about Canadian wildflowers, their conservation and habitat protection. It will spark students’ natural inquiry into action projects that can support students to help wildflower conservation and habitat protection at school, home and in their communities. Students can learn the official wildflower for each province and territory of Canada. This works well for integrating your Social Studies, Geography and Science subjects. Let’s continue with the HOOPAH theme! Wind farms in Nova Scotia are a hopeful sign that Canada is steadily transitioning toward a cleaner energy future. By harnessing strong coastal winds, they generate electricity without the greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuels, helping reduce the province’s reliance on coal. This shift supports national climate goals while protecting air quality and public health. As more projects come online, wind energy represents a growing source of sustainable, locally produced power. Together, these developments signal real momentum toward a more resilient and renewable energy system across Canada.

In the Energy Game Eco-Game at Earth | Eco-Games and Virtual Choice Boards, students will investigate different sources of energy. From the resources on the Energy virtual choice board, students will learn about energy sources and the complex interactions of their usage. They will decide for themselves what the positive and negative effects of these different sources of energy are on our planet.

People can experience eco-anxiety over the magnitude of problems related to loss of biodiversity and habitats, and the impacts of global warming. Educators can encourage their students and each other to channel these difficult emotions in eco-action, which supports our well-being and helps the planet! Together we can make a difference! Happy Earth Day from Eco-Inquiry!
