The Water Systems Eco-Game and virtual choice board
Over seventy percent of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Water connects us all. People say you are what you eat, but more correctly you are what you drink, as the body is over sixty percent water. The smallest animals in the world, microorganisms, live in water, and the largest animals in the world, whales, live in water. Without water, nothing on planet Earth could survive for very long. Photographed from the moon, our planet looks like a blue marble suspended in infinite space. Astronauts remark on its beauty, its fragility and its smallness from this perspective, a insight from which humans stand to gain wisdom.
In the Water Systems Game, students are introduced to various features within water systems and watersheds, and some of the problems associated with them like pollution from oil spills and plastic, and human built obstructions, like dams. Note that the symbols on the game card are based on the Maritime International Signal flags, which students may enjoy researching to discover more about this internationally recognized coding system. In the Water Systems virtual choice board, educators and students will find resources to learn about water systems, sustainability and social justice issues. Water systems do not have a voice of their own: they need people to care enough to act to help them! Explore how many groups have organized ways to get involved as a Citizen Scientist and water activist. The United Nations has declared the decade from 2018-2028 The Decade for Action for Water Sustainable Development. Click on the Water Systems virtual choice board below to get started.
